WHAT ARE CRIME GRIDS?
Crime Grids are a way for the Police Department to track crime in neighborhoods. These crime grids are used by not only the Command Staff to know which areas of the city are seeing an increase and/or decrease in crime, but also citizens can find the crime grid in which their home resides and call the Police Department to get crime statistics in their neighborhood. The crime grids are different shapes and sizes based on how the city developed over the years. If you are interested in knowing about the crime in your neighborhood, find the crime grid in which your home resides and send an email to eberl@cityofmerced.org with not only the crime grid number (such as 2R22), but also send your address so that we can verify the crime grid number. Within seventy-two hours, you should receive an email reply that includes a report giving you a summary of the types of calls for police service in your neighborhood.
The crime grids follow this basic formatting:
#X# / number letter number
1 = North District / 2 = Central District / 3 = South District
S = School / P = Park / C = Commercial / R = Residential
# = the assigned grid
So, for example, crime grid 1R78 means the neighborhood is in the North District (1) in a residential area (R) and is the 78th residential grid in the North District. Crime grid 3S8 means the grid is in the South District (3) on a school property (S) and is the 8th school grid in the South District.
