Mainplace Merced has become the turning point of the renaissance of downtown. In the few years since its opening, downtown has become an entertainment and cultural center for the City and greater region.
Due to the poor conditions of the buildings, marginal tenants, and extensive vacancies the Redevelopment Agency targeted the block as an excellent opportunity for redevelopment in 1991. While preparing plans, an associate of The Tolkin Group became interested after seeing the site on a recent visit to Yosemite. Soon, a vision of a downtown entertainment complex evolved.
When the theater opened in May of 2001 and the accompanying retail spaces were completed in 2003, a downtown destination was born. The 64,000 sq. ft. $15.4 million facility in the heart of downtown has drawn a previously skeptical public back to the downtown.
The Mainplace project was honored with a “Crystal Eagle” award from the California Downtown Association in 2003.
