GIS Day has it all mapped out for you

City of Merced and Central Cal URISA are hosting a GIS Day open house on Wednesday, Nov. 16 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Sam Pipes Room at the Merced Civic Center.

GIS Day (Geographic Information Systems) is an international event day for geographers and anyone interested in mapping.  This annual event is usually held on the third Wednesday of November, National Geography month.

There will be several city departments and agencies displaying how they use GIS as well as a map gallery in the Civic Center first floor foyer.  The map gallery is open the entire month of November.  The event is free and open to the public.  Come by and see some interesting maps and meet the GIS folks who created them.

There's an app for this Day

Lewis and Clark. Mac and Cheese. Maps and Apps. Some things just go together! With all of the developments occurring throughout our industry we were bound to reach 'There's an app for that!' sooner rather than later.

Now when you visit the City of Merced's Map Gallery for GIS Day and want to speak up about your favorite map, there will be an app for that.

The Esri app Survey123 will allow Gallery visitors to vote on their favorite maps by downloading the app, creating an ArcGIS Online account, and requesting to join the Group Merced GIS Day Map Voting.

For those of us who are always running out of phone space, or are pressed for time, there is a shortened URL that can be entered into your phone's web browser, no downloads required. Not only does Survey123 offer a new level of interaction with the Map Gallery, it's also extends to field data collection for utilities, grad students, nonprofit organizations, and disaster response. Visit to see how you can utilize this tool in your own workforce.
