'Open house' for artifical turf fields at McNamara Park
Check out the fields at McNamara Park
The artificial turf fields at McNamara Park will have a open house/public play next week from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, July 26, and Thursday, July 28. If there is enough interest, the open house will continue on Aug. 2, 4, 9 and 11 to let the public see what artificial turf fields are like to run and play on.
On Tuesdays when the fields are open, the Mobile Rec truck will be at the McNamara field to provide other entertainment and recreation fun for the public. The Mobile Rec truck will be at the park from 3:30 until 6:30 p.m.
City staff will be on hand to supervise the play on the fields. Only athletic shoes and regular soccer cleats can be worn on the field. No high heels or metal cleats. No drinks are allowed on the field, except water. No food, chewing gum or sunflower seeds is allowed on the field.
The artificial turf fields were built as part of a state renovation grant, replacing baseball fields that hadn't been used for more than a decade. The fields are used by the Merced Atlas Soccer League and the Merced Youth Soccer Association. The fields are available for rent by calling the City Parks and Recreation Department at 385-6978.
The McNamara Youth Center in the park is open for drop-in activities Mondays through Fridays from 3 to 6 p.m.
The McNamara Pool is open for recreational swimming Thursdays through Sundays from 3 to 6 p.m. The cost is $1 for youth and $2 for adults 18 and up. Fridays are Free Swim Fridays courtesy of the Satellite Rotary Club for all youths under 18.
