Council candidates can get their paperwork Monday

Candidates can begin filing for Mayor, Council seats Monday  Candidates for the Merced City Council can begin filing their paperwork starting at 8 a.m. Monday, July 18 at the Merced County Registrar of Voters. The filing period closes at 5 p.m. Friday, Aug. 12.

The Mayor's seat and three Council seats are up for election. The Mayor serves a two-year term and Council members serve a four-year term.

The Mayor is an at-large position, meaning everyone in the City eligible to vote can vote for mayoral candidates.

This is the first year that Merced will have District elections for Council. The Council seats for Districts 1, 3, and 5 are up for election. Council members must live in the District they want to represent and only those living in the District can vote for their representative.

'Because Districts are new to Merced voters, we are doing everything we can to help people learn what District they are in,' said Assistant City Clerk John Tresidder. 'We have a map available online at our home page, www.cityofmerced.org, and we have maps posted in City Hall so citizens can find which District they live in. And they can always call us at 388-8650 if they need help figuring out what District they are in.'

 The election will be held Nov. 8. The last day to register to vote for the election is Oct. 24. To register to vote go to registertovote.ca.gov.
