Deadline nears for Charter Review Committee applications

There are only a few days left before the City Council will select members for the Citizens Advisory Charter Review Committee. Council is scheduled to pick the members at its Monday, May 20 meeting.

The group of residents will make recommendations to the Council for possible Charter revisions for the March 2020 Primary ballot.

Committee members must be 18 and registered to vote in the City. There will be representatives selected from each of the six Council Districts and three selected at-large. Two Council members will sit on the committee as non-voting members.

The City of Merced is one of 121 Charter cities in the state. The rest of the 482 cities are known as general law cities. Charters are similar to a Constitution and allow Cities more power and discretion in how they operate. As a Charter City, Merced can determine how it is organized and enact legislation pertaining to municipal affairs different than those adopted by the state.

Committee applications are available online at or by calling 209-388-8650. They are due at 5 p.m. May 20.
