Shade sail damaged by vandals
Vandals destroyed a shade sail at McNamara Park Wednesday evening, and attempted to destroy the remaining shade sail in the park. The 15-foot by 15-foot triangular canvas shade structure was installed last year by the City of Merced in the park to provide shade for park-goers. According to witnesses, four young males climbed on a trash can and jumped on the shade sail like it was a trampoline, despite objections from other park attendees. When the first shade sail broke, they apparently climbed on the second one and started jumping on it before they left the park.
The City is still trying to determine the replacement cost of the canvas sail cloth. The entire package for the shade structure, including the poles, was $4,466. As part of a $2.6 million renovation grant security cameras were installed in McNamara Park. The footage from those cameras will be reviewed to determine if the suspects can be identified.
