The 19th annual Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration in Merced will honor and pay a special tribute to Bishop Dwight Amey, one of its originators and chairman of the Merced MLK Committee. Bishop Amey and Dr. Napoleon Washington Jr. will be the Grand Marshalls of the March in Merced on Monday, Jan. 19.
Bishop Dwight Walter Amey, Sr. , has been Pastor of New Faith Tabernacle Christian Church of Merced for 35 years. He has conducted revivals and marriage seminars across the country and in Germany, Japan and Turkey.
He is a past member of the Merced City Council, Officer of the Courts, Lions Club, Kiwanis Club, member of the Merced Citizen Advisory Redevelopment Agency, City of Merced Parks and Recreation Commission and president of Friends of Merced Parks and Recreation.
Bishop Amy also is the chairman for the annual Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration. The City Council recently honored him by naming the Dwight Amy Neighborhood Park after him.
Dr. Napoleon Washington Jr. will be the Master of Ceremonies for the annual multi-cultural program at the Merced County Fairgrounds, beginning at noon. Dr. Washington Jr. is currently a Pastor-At-Large, and has previously pastored in the City of Merced and Los Banos. Dr. Washington is the Broker/Owner of Napoleon Washington Jr. Insurance Agency of Merced. Dr. Washington has 45 years of experience in the insurance business serving the people of Merced County.
Dr. Washington is twice past President of National Association of Insurance and Financial Advisors of Merced. He currently serves as National Committeeman; he also serves as a Commissioner on the City of Merced Parks and Recreation Commission and is a past member of North Merced Rotary Club. Dr. Washington has served 2 terms as President of Merced National Association for Advancement of Colored People and is currently serving on the Branch Executive Committee. Dr. Washington is also the Vice President of Feet Changing Lives, a night walk ministry serving the City of Merced. In years past, he has coached youth Little League baseball, boys and girls basketball, cross country and track teams.
The event will begin at 11 a.m. with a march along Martin Luther King Jr. Way from the Amtrak Depot, 324 W. 24th Street, to the Merced County Fairgrounds, 900 Martin Luther King Way, where a multi-cultural celebration will be held. The march will include Latino Andalusian horses lead by Arturo Barajas, school and church groups and individuals.
At noon a multicultural program honoring Dr. Martin Luther King will be held at the Merced County Fairgrounds featuring many local civic leaders, choirs and groups, including dancers from 'Sol Del Valley' lead by Ms. Desire Artista. Exhibits reinforcing the 'Unity' theme of the event as taught by Dr. King, will be displayed at the fairgrounds during the program.
The event is sponsored by the Martin Luther King Jr. Committee and the City of Merced. There is no admission charge for the celebration.
