The Refuse Division has great options for you! We offer a temporary 3-yard Dumpster and a Bulky Item Drop-Off for our residential customers and for those even bigger projects we offer a Roll-Off Container service.
Temporary 3-Yard Dumpster
The temporary 3-yard dumpster is for general household trash, so items that you would normally place in your gray, blue or green containers can go in here. This container is very useful when cleaning out a garage, taming an overgrown yard or even spring cleaning your home. This container is not used for construction debris or large bulky items, please see below for more options.
The temporary 3-yard dumpster is for a flat rate of $157.70 which includes 4 service empties or 30 days of use, whichever comes first.
Bulky Item Drop-Off
***Due to construction delays the Bulky Item Drop-Off Site is expected be open the beginning of October. We apologize for the delay.***
No need to wait for Spring Clean-Up to dispose of your bulky items. The City of Merced’s has opened a bulky item drop-off site to aid our residential customers throughout the year. The City of Merced Hwy 59 Site is located at the corner of North Hwy 59 and Yosemite Ave. Hours of Operation are Tuesday to Friday from 12:00 PM to 3:00 PM and the 1st Saturday of the Month from 8:00 AM to 12:00 PM (days and hours may change depending on operation needs)
- Check in with City staff upon arrival.
- Staff will check your residential service verification, 2 forms of proof are needed.
- Driver’s license or ID card
- Utility Bill. Acceptable utility bills are: City of Merced Water/Sewer/Garbage; PG&E; MID.
- City staff will check the items and direct you to each station needed.
** Please drive slow while on the site, 5 MPH, and no using you cell phone **
- Passenger/Pickup Tires, Up to 5
- Metal / Appliances
- Propane / Helium Tanks with the Valve removed
Not Accepted Items:

- Green Waste

- Liquids of any kind
Household Hazardous Waste
Household Hazardous Waste is defined as any leftover household product that can catch fire, react, or explode under certain circumstances, or that are corrosive or toxic.
Items such as fluorescent light tubes/bulbs, paints, cleaners, oils, batteries, antifreeze and pesticides are some of the more commonly known household hazardous wastes.

Roll-Off Container Service
For construction debris, a roof job, a remodel, furniture, or other large objects and big projects a Roll-Off may be needed. Our Roll-off’s come in 10, 20 and 30 cubic yard sizes (photo below). The cost of a Roll-off container is made up of several components.
For each Roll-off container rented there is a daily rental fee of $5.11.
Each time the container is emptied there is a haul fee of $222.86 and the landfill costs to dispose of the material.
Landfill costs can vary widely and are simply a “pass through cost” or whatever the landfill charges us to dump your items, we charge directly back to you. Typically the cost is by weight, $43.05 per ton for general waste. There are also charges for appliances, non-refrigerated appliances, tires based on size and mattresses. If you have a refuse account in good standing, the charges for dumpsters can be placed on your account. Or if you are a tenant and/or the refuse bill is not in your name, you can pay a deposit in advance.
For either of these types of dumpsters, service is provided on a next business day basis. The Public Works office is open Monday through Friday, 7:30 AM to 4:30 PM.
