Welcome to the Merced Fire Department!
Proudly Serving Since 1873

Fire Chief Shawn Henry

Welcome from Fire Chief Shawn Henry

The City of Merced was incorporated in 1889 and is located in the Central Valley.  It is the 100th largest city in California with a population of 81,722 as of 01/01/25 according to the California Department of Finance.

Last year the Merced Fire Department (MFD) responded to 6,362 calls for service from 5 Fire Stations.  The Insurance Service Office (ISO) has provided the City of Merced with an ISO Rating of 2, where the rating is from 1 to 10, with 1 being the best.

We strongly believe in community involvement, with 5 fire stations throughout the city, we have a presence in every neighborhood.

Our value to the community is measured by the service we can provide.  Every day, our firefighters, who are also trained as Emergency Medical Technicians strive to provide the best emergency and medical services possible to the citizens of Merced.

Keeping Our Neighborhoods Safe
In addition to our daily protection of life and property, the Merced Fire Department is committed to making Merced prepared for any emergency. We’re accomplishing this through additional training for our firefighters, Hazardous Materials, Water and Specialized Technical Rescue teams. We have also formed regional partnerships with other fire departments to strengthen resources during an emergency.
