Surplus sale this month

Finish your back-to-school shopping at the City of Merced’s semi-annual Surplus Property Sale this month. There are all sorts of items available up for bid for everyone in the family.


There’s a podium (starting bid $2) available so your budding orator can practice “The Gettysburg Address” for his speech class. Or you can bid on a preowned desk for the student in the family and let him or her pick between metal or wood (both starting at $5).


Add some excitement to a dorm room with a pool table, air hockey or foosball game (all start with $2 bids). Go retro with a Smith Corona typewriter ($2 starting bid) or a CD player and speakers ($5 starting bid).


There are TVs to bid on, cabinets and lots of comfy chairs. There are plenty of pallets available including “auto parts,” ($10 starting bid), “police K9 equipment” ($10 starting bid), “blower pieces” (starting bid $25)” or “light housings” (also $25).


And what house (or dorm) doesn’t need a real fire hydrant? (Sorry, you don’t get a connection to water service.) There are 35 hydrants up for grabs with a $10 minimum bid and they include such name brands as American Darling, Western, Pacific States, Iowa and Rensselar.


There are 19 vehicles up for bid, ranging from a 2000 Chevy Malibu (starting bid $750) to that classic collectable, a 1986 GMC 6000 dump truck (starting bid $2,000). Before the vehicles can be registered, the winning bidders must get smog certificates as needed.


There are lots of computers and laptops, but all of them are missing hard drives for security reasons. Scanners, printers and monitors also are available.


A bid packet listing the 249 lots up for sale is available at the City Purchasing Office. It is also on the City’s website,, listed under Public Information.


Most of the property may be inspected at the Purchasing Office, 2525 O St, between 9 to 11 a.m. and 1 to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday.


All items are sold “as is” and there is no warranty or guarantee on the items. Bidders are expected to inspect the items before submitting a bid. Proposals will be accepted until 10 a.m. Thursday, August 26 at the Purchasing Office. In most case winners must pick up their equipment within 14 days. Payment must be made in cash, cashier’s check or money order. No personal checks. Additional details are available at the Purchasing Office.
